Tesla Model Y: Overhyped or Underrated? A Millennial Mom's Turo Test Drive

So, I finally caved and rented a 2024 Model Y Long Range. Full disclosure: I had some serious Tesla skepticism going in. But hey, even a skeptic can be surprised, right? My weekend with the Y was...complicated. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't amazing either. “Average” might be the best word.

The biggest issue? That giant screen. Controlling everything through it is distracting, even dangerous. Who thought putting essential driving information on the same screen as the climate controls was a good idea? And don't even get me started on the lack of Android Auto/Apple CarPlay. Sure, there are workarounds, but why should I have to hack my car's infotainment system?

Then there’s the one-pedal driving. It’s definitely an adjustment. I felt like I was constantly overthinking the braking. Maybe it gets easier with time, but it wasn’t intuitive for me.

Space-wise, it's bigger than a sedan but smaller than a true SUV. My three kids fit in the back, but let’s just say it wasn’t a happy ride. Anyone with a larger family regularly using the second row might find it cramped.

What about range anxiety? The Long Range version claims almost 500km, but I'm curious what real-world range looks like, especially in Canadian winters. Anyone have experience with this?

Overall, the Model Y felt like a mixed bag. Some cool features, some frustrating quirks. Is it the game-changer everyone claims? Or are we all just caught up in the hype? I’m genuinely curious to hear other owners’ perspectives. What are your long-term experiences? What are the biggest pros and cons you've found? Is it worth the price tag? Let the debate begin!
